Brittney Brownfield, MS, LPC
Lakeview Illinois, Licensed Professional Counselor
Hi, my name is Brittney and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the states of Illinois and Ohio. In Ohio, I worked at two different partial hospitalization programs for children and adolescents who were struggling with intensive issues that were impacting their ability to maintain in school and in their homes. The diagnoses I have aided children with are various: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Psychotic Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and more. Many of my clients have been in crises that presented in many different ways: suicidal thoughts, self-harm, extreme aggression towards others. The majority of my past clientele have suffered from some sort of trauma and I have been trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. I have also seen many children who are struggling with symptoms of Reactive Attachment Disorder which can disrupt a child’s ability to form appropriate bonds with those around them which can greatly impact families.
Brittney specializes in counseling exceptional children & adolescents. To schedule an appointment with her, call (888) 870-1775.
I have extensive experience working with the families of children who are struggling and helping the parents to understand how to adjust their perceptions, their parenting, and their communication to help build a more loving and healthy relationship. I have worked with many adoptive and foster families who needed help adjusting to the new family dynamic that comes from bringing a child into the home who has their own unique history and needs. My approach in family sessions is very much psycho-educational for the parents: helping them understand diagnoses, teaching behavioral interventions, role-playing active listening, and exploring with parents how they themselves cope with stressors in their life.
I attended graduate school at Wright State University in Fairborn, OH in which I received my M.S. in Counseling with a concentration in Exceptional Children. What this means is I have acquired experience and education working with a wide range of exceptional children, whether that means kids who have anger and behavioural issues, kid who have experienced trauma, kids who are gifted, kids with multiple disabilities, or kids with several of these unique components
I really enjoy working with children and adolescents and giving them a chance to voice their feelings and experiences without judgment in a space that is just for them. I have worked with children as young as 4 years old and very much enjoy the challenge of adapting my style to their intellectual and emotional level. These could mean using play in sessions with my clients or coloring or role-play. That being said, I would categorize my approach as eclectic but with a primary focus on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. I am also a strong believer in Stoicism, the idea that life is made up by how we perceive and react to external factors and by owning that power. I look forward to working with you and helping you.
